Why the Honda Ridgeline Enjoys Such Dramatic Staying Power

In a world fraught with drastically reduced consumer spending and massive government bailouts for domestic automakers, Honda has been quietly going about business as usual. This is due in part to an enormously loyal customer base. Once you've owned a Honda, you won't go back to another brand, seems to be the mantra offered up by most current Honda owners. However, the automaker's run of excellent luck is also due to their model lineup, in which the Ridgeline features quite prominently.

When the Ridgeline first debuted on the scene several years ago, it certainly "made waves." Unlike other import automakers, the Ridgeline was Honda's first foray into the truck market and the designers and engineers responsible for creating the truck were determined to get it right the first time. It seems they have succeeded, as the Ridgeline is one of the most popular light trucks in the nation and has won numerous accolades and awards, as well. Why is the Ridgeline such a popular option? How does it top the offerings from Ford, Dodge, Chevy and even Toyota?

First, you'll need to understand the key differences between the Ridgeline and what most consumers think of when they hear the word "truck." When you think of a truck, chances are you picture a machine designed for utilitarian usage, hauling, towing and pulling. You likely imagine the bed loaded down with construction materials, or the truck pulling a trailer with heavy equipment on it. The Ridgeline can certainly do this, as well. However, the truck is designed a bit differently.

While most automakers, even vaunted Toyota, create their trucks with a definite lack of refinement, the Ridgeline seems more like a luxury SUV that just happens to have a sizeable bed on it. Of course, you'll find elements of utilitarian design. Take the integrated closed-box frame of the truck for example, designed for strength and rigidity. On the other hand, consider the 3.5-liter V6 engine, with 250 hp and the VTM 4-wheel drive system. The integrated Class III trailer hitch is another nod at real use in the real world.

However, when you sit within the Ridgeline, you're not struck by how plain and "ordinary" it is. In short, you don't feel as though you're sitting in a truck. With the unique cab design, cable of seating five grown adults in comfort, the lockable in-bed trunk, the dual tailgate, integrated Bluetooth technology, the optional rearview camera and other luxury upgrades, the Ridgeline delivers on comfort, enjoyment and power.
